Behind the Scenes: How a Font Is Born
Fonts don’t just magically appear on your laptop, ready to make your Cricut crafts and wedding invites look amazing. Behind every cute swirl, bold serif, or quirky bounce is a process—and spoiler alert: it’s part art, part science, and part obsession.
So what does it actually take to bring a font to life? Let’s break it down step-by-step. (Spoiler: it’s not just clicking “Save As Font.”)
Step 1: Sketching the Vision
It all starts with a doodle, a scribble, or an “I wonder if…”
Some font ideas begin on paper, others in Procreate or Illustrator—but every font starts with a style in mind:
- Whimsical and fun?
- Elegant and romantic?
- Bold and blocky with attitude?
Each letter is hand-drawn (or Apple Pencil’d), keeping in mind the overall vibe. Yes, we draw A to Z—one by one!
Step 2: Vector Magic
Once the letters are sketched, they’re cleaned up into smooth, scalable vector shapes in Illustrator.
That means:
- Smoothing out curves
- Making sure lines are consistent
- Fixing that one wonky “g” that just won’t behave
It’s like giving your letters a makeover—precision brows, smooth edges, and a whole lotta polish.
Step 3: Building the Font File
Now comes the nerdy part. We import the letters into font software (like FontForge or Glyphs) and assign each one to its proper spot on your keyboard.
This is also where we:
- Add kerning (aka spacing between letters)
- Program in alternates, ligatures, and special glyphs
- Test every combination (so your “la” doesn’t look like a weird hug)
Step 4: Export, Test, Tweak, Repeat
We test the font in Canva, Cricut Design Space, and design software to make sure it cuts well, looks clean, and plays nice with different platforms.
Then we tweak. And test. And tweak again.
(And maybe yell at the ampersand a few times. Looking at you, &.)
Step 5: Bundle, List & Launch!
Once the font is 100% ready, it gets:
- A cover image
- Preview sheets
- A usage guide (especially if it has extras or alternates!)
Then we pop it into the shop and send it off into the world to inspire creativity, pretty up planners, and bring someone’s vision to life.
Final Thoughts from a Font-Maker
Creating fonts isn’t just a technical process—it’s storytelling through letters.
Every curve, bounce, and swirl is intentional. And when someone uses one of our fonts on a wedding invite, a product label, or a Cricut project… it’s ✨ magic ✨.
