Cricut + Fonts: Tips for the Cleanest Cuts

Raise your hand if you’ve ever fallen in love with a font…
...only to watch it get butchered by your Cricut blade 😩

We’ve been there. Tiny curls, fragile loops, or overly detailed letters can turn a dreamy font into a jagged mess. But don’t worry—we’ve learned a few tricks to help you get clean, professional-looking cuts every time.

Here’s how to make your fonts Cricut-friendly (without sacrificing style):

1. Pick the Right Font Style

Let’s start with the basics—not all fonts are designed to be cut.

If you’re crafting with Cricut, look for fonts that are:

  • Thick and bold (so the blade has room to move)
  • Smooth and simple (no spiky edges or pixelated lines)
  • Connected scripts that weld easily in Design Space
  • Monoline fonts (single-width strokes = easier cuts)

By the way, we have some Great Cricut-friendly fonts: Giggle Pop, Sweet Sugar Script, Vera Serif

2. Weld, Don’t Slice

If you’re using a script font, those letters probably overlap—which is great for design but confusing for Cricut.

➡️ Pro tip: Always weld your text before cutting!
Welding merges overlapping letters into one solid shape, so the blade cuts it as a smooth word instead of each letter separately.

3. Increase Letter Spacing When Needed

If your font looks a little too tight in Design Space, bump up the letter spacing. Too-close letters can cut into each other or lift during the cut.

Bonus: Adjust spacing before you weld—it’s way easier to fix while the text is still editable.

4. Watch Your Size

Cricut blades are pretty magical, but they’re not miracle workers. Fonts with tiny loops or swashes can get torn up when cut small.

Rule of thumb:

  • Cut delicate fonts no smaller than 2–3 inches wide
  • For ultra-clean results, size up whenever possible

5. Always Test Cut First

Don’t waste your good vinyl! Test your font with a small trial cut using scrap material before committing.

You’ll catch any:

  • Weeding nightmares
  • Fragile points
  • Or odd details that disappear when cut too small
