🎨 The 5 Font Categories Every Designer Should Know

Ever stared at a font list for 30 minutes like you were choosing a baby name?

Yeah, same.

There are literally thousands of fonts out there—but here’s the thing: most of them fall into just five major font categories. Once you know what each one does best, picking the right font becomes waaaay easier.

1. Serif Fonts

Think: elegant, classic, and just a little fancy.

You’ll recognize serif fonts by their little “feet” or strokes at the ends of the letters. They give off serious editorial vibes—perfect for brands that want to feel timeless and trustworthy.

Great for: wedding invites, books, logos, packaging

Examples: Times New Roman, Playfair Display, our own Vera Serif

2. Sans Serif Fonts

Clean, modern, no extra fluff.

Sans serif fonts skip the fancy feet and go straight to business. They're super easy to read on screens and look fresh in just about any design.

Great for: digital products, logos, minimalist branding

Examples: Helvetica, Montserrat, Futura, Focus Type

3. Script Fonts

Cursive, handwritten, and full of personality.

Script fonts are perfect when you want your text to feel personal. Some are bouncy and playful, others are romantic and elegant—but they all bring emotion.

Great for: Cricut crafts, planners, wedding designs, Instagram quotes

Examples: Blushberry, Marshmallow Script, Sweet Sugar Script

4. Display Fonts

Loud, fun, and not afraid of attention.

Display fonts are meant to be used BIG. Headlines, posters, product packaging—this is where you let your fonts shine and show off their quirky charm.

Great for: bold branding, kids’ products, t-shirts, signage

Examples: Giggle Pop, Gothic Crown, Flatfoot, Groovy Dayz

5. Decorative Fonts

Whimsical, themed, or doodle-heavy.

Decorative fonts often include extras like hearts, stars, symbols, or hand-drawn doodles. They’re not for body text—but they’re PERFECT when you want to sprinkle in a little fun.

Great for: stickers, SVGs, teacher printables, journals

Examples: Slide & Swipe, Gigglish, Cutie Liner
